Year 3 -fashion BA – First week back

My final year has started and I have already been given so many projects. I can tell this year is going to be amazing but exhausting. I hope to achieve a lot this year.

For my final project I will be inspired by Ukrainian embroidery. I think Ukraine has beautiful garments. The colours are very beautiful and I want to have these bright colours within my collection. I am a very colourful person and I would like my collection to show me . I want my collection to show my personality and my interest. I love embroidery and I would love to have embroidery within this.

These are some inspirational images that I have started to develop and look into.

Year 3- Fashion BA

My final year is going to begin within a week and i’m excited about all the projects i will be working on. This year will be very inspirational for my career and I hope to come out of it as a independent designer.

Surprisingly, this year has been good and I have learnt a lot from the experiences. I believe all the experiences good and bad; they have curved me and made me more experienced in my future career.

This is a project I worked on whilst in my placement year. Using embroidery on denim jacket.

This project was working on denim, which I upcycled. I used embroidery to make it different and I really loved doing this project as it was very me.

I really enjoy having the fusion of western and cultural wear. Since I was young I

have always loved monsoon. I love how monsoon creates that fusion between cultural and western fashion. They make their garments so different and so beautiful.

Teaching placement

Tuesdays experience:

I went into the school yesterday . I was there all day from 8.45 to 3.30. It was such a tiring day and I didn’t realise how exhausting a full day class room experience can be.

In the morning their were 2 hours of the first year 7 and then another 2 hours of another group of year students. After that It was an hour of year 8. The experience with the year 7 was interesting . They were making a gym bag.

The year 7 students first had to pin the sides and tack it. After this, they used the machine to sew down the sides. They are all making a gym bag which has rope to close it. They,re are different abilities of students so I helped the ones who were having a hard time. Most of the young students were having a hard time tacking . The tacking process , putting the thread in the needle repeatedly was making them irritated. I tried to keep them engaged and support them to keep at it.

I found the time quite enjoyable even though it was tiring. This is something I would want to do in the future alongside having my own brand. Teaching has always been a route that I’ve always wanted to take. When I did experience in primary school. I didn’t enjoy it because I think I felt like their was less art sort of experience . Primary school teachers, teach every subject so its hard. I want to teach only fashion related subject like textiles and art.

Thursdays Experience:

img_3156img_3154img_3161

This was my first day with the GCSE students who are doing BTEC fashion textiles. They were a small quiet group. I spent two hours here looking at their working. They were developing their drawings using different ways (wax crayon, pencils ,feltips)

The teacher was explaining to me about what they’re doing this term. She said once they’ve done their drawings they will be using the laser cutter to have fabrics etched with they’re drawings.

I think with GCSE students they are much better to work with than the younger students. One reason for this is because GCSE students have chosen this subject so they have some passion towards it compared to the younger students who have to do this. I enjoyed working in both areas and I think their is a big difference in working at a primary school and working at a secondary school.

I think being at this teaching placement, it is making me a more patient person. I love problem solving and with the students you get to do that a lot. All the students have different capabilities, and I have to know ways to get around it on my own.

Design work

I have made illustrations which I’ve done inspired from the research that I’ve done in flowers and nature. Simki and I have had discussions over which fabric and discussed  the colour pallete. She then asked me to develop some designs.

The work I have done in the first 2 years at university (Fashion BA) has made me a better designer. I have done a variety of different projects which has made me comfortable in designing in areas I’ve not got any experience in. I have been taught in a good way to work. I know how to research into trends and develop it.

School experience

Tuesday:

On Tuesday I went into Sidney Stringer Academy for my teaching placement but the teacher was sick. I was then taken into the art department where I was advised to stay and help a cooking class. The design department were really friendly and said that I shouldn’t have to waste another day so I can learn choose what I wanted to do. I thought it would be a good idea to just help the food technology teacher as experience in a teaching environment was the main reason I wanted to do this.

I went and helped the food tech teacher with her baking the cake . I needed experience in a classroom environment.

This was the first half of the day which was  fun. I helped the children with cooking an upside down cake. The teacher was really happy that I was their to help because I could see how hard it gets in their. I was helping with year 7 which were very quiet and I went to help all of them with tasks. They were struggling with opening a can which I showed and helped them individually. The 2 hours were busy for me because they all wanted help and the teacher was at the front explaining the process and giving out material to the children that didn’t bring their ingredients.

I didn’t take pictures whilst the students were there because some of the students don’t have parental consent to take pictures. I thought to take pictures before and after the class.

A rack for the students to cool down their cake. A lot of children bought pineapple slices or peach slices to decorate the cake.

The upside down cake left to cool down. The students will pick them up after school.

The teacher gave me the cake she had made because she was pleased with the help.  She spoke to me about the issues that a teacher in the design faculty gets.  Their are issues with children not bringing the equipment/ ingredient or not focusing in class.  She says their are different abilities of students so you have to be aware and work differently with different children. She was saying how usually she has a technician to help her which she says is really important in such classes

For the first classroom experience it was good.  I think I wouldn’t mind becoming a teacher because I enjoy making a difference and help others. I think helping students and seeing the same passion you have for the subject ; allows you to become a good teacher. For a student to love the subject , the teacher needs to show a lot of interest. I think I have that ability to help student. I think if I was teacher I would want to be a textiles teacher. In the future this could be something I’d want to do.

Afternoon Textiles lesson:

The teacher wasn’t in as she was unwell so their was a cover teacher. The cover teacher was an English teachIMG_2662er which came down in her free period to cover. She was happy with my help.

She didn’t know how to draw so she was happy I could assist with the children to help them draw and make sure they annotate their work. The teacher had already told me about the work the students would be doing so I was a little prepared and did some research with bags. I told the year 7 to look at their bags and I Showed a few images of bags on the interactive board after talking to the teacher. She was happy for me to help them.

I went individually to each table to make sure each student had some work done. Their was a few students who didn’t want to work and they thought the lesson would just be a play around. I had to sit with them a few times to make sure they were doing some work. I made sure all students had completed all the tasks. Some students were finding it hard to make a bag so I helped them draw by drawing on another paper and showing easy ways to draw.

I found the lesson more interesting as this was the area I know and understand. I felt really good being able to help the young students with drawings and understanding the features of a bag.

These are few examples of the work the students did. The task was to draw a school bag, the front and the back. After they did this they would fill the questions on the left hand side of the A3 sheet. After they had completed this task , they needed to draw 6 logo for the bag which was inspired by something they like , a hobby etc.

Teaching internship

I have my internship starting from next Tuesday at the school. I was told to think of an acitivity \ project I could do with the year 8/9 . I think this would be a great idea.

I wanted to do an upcycling project where they could get an old shirt top, garment and style it . They could draw on it, paint it , embroidery . I think this project would work for everyone . For the kids of different levels.

I will do an example so they can see from it. I think this would be a good idea for me to be comfortable and be able to see how being a teacher is.

I have done teaching in the past, which was a two week work experience at a primary school. I’ve done one to one tutoring as well so I have had a good amount of experience with children .

I think this will be a different experience as it’s secondary school. I think I will enjoy the experience as I love helping others. During the time I was doing my a level , I had thought to myself to do art therapy after my fashion or any art related course. I wanted to help others . I loved the colourful environment and how it made me feel. I wanted to make other people enjoy this excitement too. I think teaching would be a great idea, it’s helping children and teaching the importance of textiles.

Teaching placement

I sorted my placement with Sidney stringer school.  On Monday I had a meeting with the textiles teacher to plan what days I should come in.

The teacher working at Sidney stringer is Hannah Johnson . She’s very nice and she asked me to choose whichever days suited me . Tuesday and Thursday would be a good idea as those days were fully packed with lessons. It would give me a good amount of experience . She had textiles GCSE and year 7,8 on those days. She said it would be good for me to gain experience in both days . This experience is valuable for me as it’ll give me an understanding in working with different age groups.

This experience should allow me to understand better in what I want to do in the future and if teaching is something I want to do. I should be prepared in what I want to do in the future. I think this experience will help me to build more confidence in working with the students .

I will start this placement after the Easter holidays. I think this would be a good idea because it’ll be a new term and she can introduce me to the class .

I am quite nervous because I haven’t done this sort of this before, I have worked with children but not teenagers . I haven’t worked with secondary students . I think they’ll be much more creative and fun to work with.
